Where traditions migrate, East meets North. Roots are rarely static. They travel through stories, ideas, and the fluid movement of ink on paper. In this exhibition, "Moving Roots" explores the deep-rooted dialogue between distinct worlds through a single, resilient symbol: the pine tree. In Finland, the pine (Mänty) is a dominant, enduring presence shaping the northern landscape and local history. It is the very same tree that legendary artist Albert Edelfelt immortalized in his 1892 masterpiece at Linnamäki, overlooking historic Porvoo. Across the world in Chinese culture, the pine (松Sōng) represents the ultimate symbol of longevity, fortitude, and noble spirit—enduring the harshest winters while remaining vibrantly green. For this solo exhibition, contemporary artist Pan Jianfeng channels these moving roots across borders. The collection of 17 artworks traces a visual journey from sun-drenched pines painted in Mallorca to local pines captured right here in Porvoo. Through bold, meditative brushstrokes, Pan explores the universal essence of the forest with pieces from woods, while diving into deep existential reflections in individual works like grow from the void, escape, and the raw, contemporary strange2026.
